Race Week - A History of Origins

Hi guys, welcome back to another blog, Michéal Heaphy here.  In today's episode I am going to be sharing the historyof race week and my opinion of the Listowel races.A little backstory - The first ever race took place in Listowel in 1858. This was because there was supposed tobe a race on in Ballyeigh strand near Ballybunion but was postponed and stationed in Listowel. From this dateonwards every year there has been horse races held in Listowel. Originally the Listowel races festival was only a one day event but that changed in 1862 wherethe races were held over three days. During the late 1970s the festival length further increasedto 4 and 5 days. Finally in 2002 the races were set up over a week. The listowel races are also known as the harvest festival as originally they were set aroundthe time of the harvests. This meant that many farmers after harvesting their crops came to theraces to gamble a small amount of the money they earned.Overall the races are an exciting experience for all that attend from Listowel and all around thecountry. They bring life to the town of Listowel for the week. As a local, the best day to go is often said to be the last Sunday of the races. For ladies day, head to the race track on a Friday and make sure to put on your Sunday best! There are also amusements around the town so there is something even for those who do not enjoy racing. Every day is busy at the races and I would recommend going for the atmosphere alone. If you are reading this and contemplating going next year then consider this your sign to attend!Thank you for reading this blog and I really hope you enjoyed. Talk soon, Micheal.
